With summer in full swing, staying motivated and safe while running in the heat can be a challenge. But fear not, because we’ve put together a “runner’s summer survival kit” to help you not only endure but thrive during your summer runs.
Here are a few strategies to keep you on track:
Hydration is Key
You probably knew we’d start with hydration, but as temperatures rise, staying hydrated becomes even more critical. An insulated water bottle or hydration pack will not only keep your water cool, but your hand or back too. And consider planning your routes around water fountains or other refill stations. Electrolyte drinks can also help replenish lost minerals.
Time Your Runs Wisely
Avoid the peak heat of the day by scheduling your runs for early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Not only will this help you avoid the heat, but you’ll also enjoy quieter, more peaceful runs. (If you’re running in low light conditions, make sure to bring a light!).
Dress Light
Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics that wick moisture away from your skin. Light-colored clothing can also help reflect sunlight and keep you cooler.
Cool Down Properly
After your run, take time to cool down properly by stretching and rehydrating. Consider a cool shower or ice packs to lower your body temperature.
By following these strategies and being mindful of your body’s needs, you’ll be able to beat the heat and enjoy your runs to the fullest.
